Biography Bernardo O `Higgins (O` Higgins Bernardo)
(1776-1842) Born August 20, 1776 in Chilyane. He studied in Lima, continued his education in Spain and the UK. In London, maintained relations with the Francisco de Miranda. In 1802, O'Higgins returned to Chile in 1811 entered into a national junta, and in 1814 became commander of the army of patriots. After the defeat at the battle of Rancagua in October 1814 withdrew to the territory of Argentina. Three years later, joined the liberation army of Josц? de San Martцґn. Took an active part in the Battle of Chacabuco (February 12, 1817), which culminated in the defeat of the Spaniards and brought the independence of Chile. Being the supreme ruler of Chile, O'Higgins wholly dedicated himself to consolidating the new state. During the coup in 1823, resigned and emigrated to Peru. O'Higgins died in Lima October 24, 1842.
